公元前404年，在雅典與斯巴達(dá)之間的爭(zhēng)霸戰(zhàn)（伯羅奔尼撒戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)）中，雅典落敗，斯巴達(dá)國王呂西斯特拉圖解散了雅典的民主政府，扶植了由三十個(gè)貴族組成的寡頭政府，史稱“三十僭主”。三十僭主操控政治，把窮苦平民排擠在政治之外，又實(shí)施恐怖統(tǒng)治，在8個(gè)月內(nèi)殺死的雅典人幾乎比戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)最后十年斯巴達(dá)人殺死的雅典人還要多。許多溫和派紛紛逃離雅典，而民主派則發(fā)動(dòng)反擊，最終擊敗斯巴達(dá)保護(hù)軍，殺死為首的兩名僭主，推翻三十僭主的寡頭政治，重新建立了民主制度。
